Invitatory {Antiphon from the Common or Feast}
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
Come let us praise the Lord with joy: let us joyfully sing to God our saviour. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For the Lord will not cast off his people: for in his hand are all the ends of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his.
Ant. O come, let us worship.
For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (genuflect) Come let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us: For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts: As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.
Ant. O come, let us worship.
Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart. And these men have not known my ways: so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. O come, let us worship.

Hymn {from the Common or Feast}
O God, of those that fought thy fight,
Portion, and prize, and crown of light,
Break every bond of sin and shame
As now we praise thy martyr's name.

He recked not of the world's allure,
But sin and pomp of sin forswore:
Knew all their gall, and passed them by,
And reached the throne prepared on high.

Bravely the course of pain he ran,
And bare his torments as a man:
For love of thee his blood outpoured,
And thus obtained the great reward.

With humble voice and suppliant word
We pray thee therefore, holy Lord,
While we thy martyr's feast-day keep,
Forgive thy loved and erring sheep.

Glory and praise for aye be done
To God the Father, and the Son,
And Holy Ghost, who reign on high,
One God, to all eternity.
Amen.

Psalm 34(1-10) [1]
34:1 Judge thou, O Lord, them that wrong me: * overthrow them that fight against me.
34:2 Take hold of arms and shield: * and rise up to help me.
34:3 Bring out the sword, and shut up the way against them that persecute me: * say to my soul: I am thy salvation.
34:4 Let them be confounded and ashamed * that seek after my soul.
34:4 Let them be turned back and be confounded * that devise against me.
34:5 Let them become as dust before the wind: * and let the Angel of the Lord straiten them.
34:6 Let their way become dark and slippery; * and let the Angel of the Lord pursue them.
34:7 For without cause they have hidden their net for me unto destruction: * without cause they have upbraided my soul.
34:8 Let the snare which he knoweth not come upon him: and let the net which he hath hidden catch him: * and into that very snare let them fall.
34:9 But my soul shall rejoice in the Lord; * and shall be delighted in his salvation.
34:10 All my bones shall say: * Lord, who is like to thee?

34:14 Quasi próximum, et quasi fratrem nostrum, sic complacébam: * quasi lugens et contristátus, sic humiliábar.
34:15 Et advérsum me lætáti sunt, et convenérunt: * congregáta sunt super me flagélla, et ignorávi.
34:16 Dissipáti sunt, nec compúncti, tentavérunt me, subsannavérunt me subsannatióne: * frenduérunt super me déntibus suis.

Psalm 34(11-17) [2]

34:12 They repaid me evil for good: * to the depriving me of my soul.
34:13 But as for me, when they were troublesome to me, * I was clothed with haircloth.
34:13 I humbled my soul with fasting; * and my prayer shall be turned into my bosom.

34:15 But they rejoiced against me, and came together: * scourges were gathered together upon me, and I knew not.
34:16 They were separated, and repented not: they tempted me, they scoffed at me with scorn: * they gnashed upon me with their teeth.

34:22 Thou hast seen, O Lord, be not thou silent: * O Lord, depart not from me.

36:10 For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: * and thou shalt seek his place, and shalt not find it.
36:11 But the meek shall inherit the land, * and shall delight in abundance of peace.
36:12 The sinner shall watch the just man: * and shall gnash upon him with his teeth.
36:13 But the Lord shall laugh at him: * for he foreseeth that his day shall come.
36:14 The wicked have drawn out the sword: * they have bent their bow.
36:14 To cast down the poor and needy, * to kill the upright of heart.

36:18 The Lord knoweth the days of the undefiled; * and their inheritance shall be for ever.
36:19 They shall not be confounded in the evil time; and in the days of famine they shall be filled, * because the wicked shall perish.
36:20 And the enemies of the Lord, presently after they shall be honoured and exalted, * shall come to nothing and vanish like smoke.
36:21 The sinner shall borrow, and not pay again; * but the just sheweth mercy and shall give.
36:22 For such as bless him shall inherit the land: * but such as curse him shall perish.
36:23 With the Lord shall the steps of a man be directed, * and he shall like well his way.
36:24 When he shall fall he shall not be bruised, * for the Lord putteth his hand under him.

36:28 For the Lord loveth judgment, and will not forsake his saints: * they shall be preserved for ever.

36:33 But the Lord will not leave him in his hands; * nor condemn him when he shall be judged.
36:34 Expect the Lord and keep his way: and he will exalt thee to inherit the land: * when the sinners shall perish thou shalt see.
36:35 I have seen the wicked highly exalted, * and lifted up like the cedars of Libanus.

37:2 Rebuke me not, O Lord, in thy indignation; * nor chastise me in thy wrath.
37:3 For thy arrows are fastened in me: * and thy hand hath been strong upon me.
37:4 There is no health in my flesh, because of thy wrath: * there is no peace for my bones, because of my sins.
37:5 For my iniquities are gone over my head: * and as a heavy burden are become heavy upon me.
37:6 My sores are putrified and corrupted, * because of my foolishness.
37:7 I am become miserable, and am bowed down even to the end: * I walked sorrowful all the day long.
37:8 For my loins are filled with illusions; * and there is no health in my flesh.
37:9 I am afflicted and humbled exceedingly: * I roared with the groaning of my heart.
37:10 Lord, all my desire is before thee, * and my groaning is not hidden from thee.

Psalmus 37(12-23) [8]
37:16 Quóniam in te, Dómine, sperávi: * tu exáudies me, Dómine, Deus meus.

Psalm 37(12-23) [8]
37:12 My friends and my neighbours * have drawn near, and stood against me.
37:12 And they that were near me stood afar off: * and they that sought my soul used violence.
37:13 And they that sought evils to me spoke vain things, * and studied deceits all the day long.
37:14 But I, as a deaf man, heard not: * and as a dumb man not opening his mouth.
37:15 And I became as a man that heareth not: * and that hath no reproofs in his mouth.
37:16 For in thee, O Lord, have I hoped: * thou wilt hear me, O Lord my God.
37:17 For I said: Lest at any time my enemies rejoice over me: * and whilst my feet are moved, they speak great things against me.
37:18 For I am ready for scourges: * and my sorrow is continually before me.
37:19 For I will declare my iniquity: * and I will think for my sin.
37:20 But my enemies live, and are stronger than I: * and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied.
37:21 They that render evil for good, have detracted me, * because I followed goodness.
37:22 Forsake me not, O Lord my God: * do not thou depart from me.
37:23 Attend unto my help, * O Lord, the God of my salvation.

Psalmus 38 [9]
38:2 Pósui ori meo custódiam, * cum consísteret peccátor advérsum me.
38:4 Concáluit cor meum intra me: * et in meditatióne mea exardéscet ignis.
38:5 Locútus sum in lingua mea: * Notum fac mihi, Dómine, finem meum.
38:9 Ab ómnibus iniquitátibus meis érue me: * oppróbrium insipiénti dedísti me.
38:10 Obmútui, et non apérui os meum, quóniam tu fecísti: * ámove a me plagas tuas.
38:12 A fortitúdine manus tuæ ego deféci in increpatiónibus: * propter iniquitátem corripuísti hóminem.
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℟. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
Ant. Ámove, Dómine, a me plagas tuas.
Ant. Remove, O Lord, * thy scourges from me.
Psalm 38 [9]
38:2 I said: I will take heed to my ways: * that I sin not with my tongue.
38:2 I have set guard to my mouth, * when the sinner stood against me.
38:3 I was dumb, and was humbled, and kept silence from good things: * and my sorrow was renewed.
38:4 My heart grew hot within me: * and in my meditation a fire shall flame out.
38:5 I spoke with my tongue: * O Lord, make me know my end.
38:5 And what is the number of my days: * that I may know what is wanting to me.
38:6 Behold thou hast made my days measurable: * and my substance is as nothing before thee.
38:6 And indeed all things are vanity: * every man living.
38:7 Surely man passeth as an image: * yea, and he is disquieted in vain.
38:7 He storeth up: * and he knoweth not for whom he shall gather these things.
38:8 And now what is my hope? Is it not the Lord? * And my substance is with thee.
38:9 Deliver thou me from all my iniquities: * thou hast made me a reproach to the fool.
38:10 I was dumb, and I opened not my mouth, because thou hast done it: * remove thy scourges from me.
38:12 The strength of thy hand hath made me faint in rebukes: * thou hast corrected man for iniquity.
38:12 And thou hast made his soul to waste away like a spider: * surely in vain is any man disquieted.
38:13 Hear my prayer, O Lord, and my supplication: * give ear to my tears.
38:13 Be not silent: for I am a stranger with thee, * and a sojourner as all my fathers were.
38:14 O forgive me, that I may be refreshed, before I go hence, * and be no more.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

℟. For I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner.
Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:
℣. Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem:
℟. Sed líbera nos a malo.
Absolutio.

12 Et cognóvi quod non esset mélius nisi lætári et fácere bene in vita sua;
℣. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
℟. Deo grátias.

℟. Verbum iníquum et dolósum longe fac a me, Dómine:

Eccl 3:9-13
9 What hath man more of his labour?
10 I have seen the trouble, which God hath given the sons of men to be exercised in it.
11 He hath made all things good in their time, and hath delivered the world to their consideration, so that man cannot find out the work which God hath made from the beginning to the end.
12 And I have known that there was no better thing than to rejoice, and to do well in this life.
13 For every man that eateth and drinketh, and seeth good of his labour, this is the gift of God.
Eccl 3:14-17
14 I have learned that all the works which God hath made, continue for ever: we cannot add any thing, nor take away from those things which God hath made that he may be feared.
15 That which hath been made, the same continueth: the things that shall be, have already been: and God restoreth that which is past.
16 I saw under the sun in the place of judgment wickedness, and in the place of justice iniquity.
17 And I said in my heart: God shall judge both the just and the wicked, and then shall be the time of every thing.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Lord, remove far from me vanity and lies.
* Give me neither poverty nor riches, but feed me with food convenient for me.
℣. Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die.
℟. Give me neither poverty nor riches, but feed me with food convenient for me.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. Give me neither poverty nor riches, but feed me with food convenient for me.
℣. Iube, Dómine, benedícere.

Sermo 44 de Sanctis
Triumphális beáti Mártyris N. dies hódie nobis anniversária celebritáte recúrrit: cuius glorificatióni sicut congáudet Ecclésia, sic eius propónit sequénda vestígia. Si enim compátimur, et conglorificábimur. In cuius glorióso agóne duo nobis præcípue consideránda sunt: induráta vidélicet tortóris sævítia, et Mártyris invícta patiéntia. Sævítia tortóris, ut eam detestémur: patiéntia Mártyris, ut eam imitémur. Audi Psalmístam advérsus malítiam increpántem: Noli æmulári in malignántibus quóniam tamquam fœnum velóciter aréscent.

℟. Deo grátias.

Reading 3
From the Sermons of St Augustine, Bishop of Hippo.
44 on the Saints.
The illustrious day whereon the blessed Martyr N. conquered, doth this day come round to us again and as the Church doth rejoice with him in his glory, so doth she set before us his footsteps to be followed. For if we suffer, we shall also reign with him. In his glorious battle we have two things chiefly to consider the hardened cruelty of the tormentor, and the unconquered patience of the Martyr the cruelty of the tormentor, that we may abhor it; the patience of the Martyr, that we may imitate it. Hear what the Psalmist saith, complaining against sin: "Fret not thyself because of the evil-doers, for they shall soon dry up like the grass." xxxvi. 1. But touching the patience which is to be shown against the evil-doers, hear the word wherewith the Apostle moveth us Ye have need of patience, that ye may receive the promise. Heb. x. 36.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Te Deum
We praise thee, O God, * we acknowledge thee to be the Lord.
All the earth doth worship thee, * the Father everlasting.
To thee all Angels cry aloud, * the Heavens, and all the Powers therein.
To thee Cherubim and Seraphim * continually do cry.
bow head Holy, Holy, Holy * Lord God of Sabaoth;
Heaven and earth are full * of the Majesty of thy glory.
The glorious company of the Apostles * praise thee.
The goodly fellowship of the Prophets * praise thee.
The noble army of Martyrs * praise thee.
The holy Church throughout all the world * doth acknowledge thee;
The Father, * of an infinite Majesty.
Thine honourable, true, * and only Son;
Also the Holy Ghost, * the Comforter.
Thou art the King of Glory, * O Christ.
Thou art the everlasting * Son of the Father.
During the following verse all make a profound bow: When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, * thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb.
When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, * thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers.
Thou sittest at the right hand of God, * in the glory of the Father.
We believe that thou shalt come * to be our Judge.
Kneel for the following verse
We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, * whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious Blood.
Make them to be numbered with thy Saints, * in glory everlasting.
O Lord, save thy people, * and bless thine heritage.
Govern them, * and lift them up for ever.
Day by day * we magnify thee;
During the following verse, by local custom, all make a profound bow. And we worship thy Name * ever, world without end.
Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us * this day without sin.
O Lord, have mercy upon us, * have mercy upon us.
O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us, * as our trust is in thee.
O Lord, in thee have I trusted, * let me never be confounded.
Reliqua omittuntur, nisi Laudes separandæ sint.
Skip the rest, unless praying Lauds separately.
Oratio {ex Proprio Sanctorum}
℣. Dómine, exáudi oratiónem meam.

℟. Amen.

℣. O Lord, hear my prayer.
℟. And let my cry come unto thee.
Let us pray.
Mercifully consider our weakness, O Almighty God, and whereas by the burden of our sins we are sore, let N. your Martyr be mercifully pleased to deliver us from all things which may hurt our bodies, and from all evil thoughts which may defile our souls.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
℟. Amen.
